Cut-Your-Own

How it’s done:

The majority of trees sold at Tannenbaum Farms are, as the name implies, ones selected and cut by our customers. Our process is fairly simple: once you’ve determined which variety you’d like to cut, we direct you to the appropriate field, you go cut it down, and you bring it back to be shaken, drilled, and baled (see “Additional Services” for details). All cut-your-own trees are the same price, regardless of size, so you don’t need to fret over a few inches here or there.

What you need:

We provide hand-saws to cut the trees—issues concerning liability prevent us from allowing customers to use chainsaws, axes, etc. on the property. It’s advisable to bring a rag or piece of cardboard to kneel on while you cut the tree, especially if the weather has been wet prior to your visit. Additionally, the fields can be muddy, so we recommend you wear a pair of older shoes. We also supply carts to help transport the trees from the fields, but during our busiest times there may be a wait to get a cart. Depending on the variety of tree you plan to cut, the size of tree, and how many able-bodied people are in your group, carrying the tree back from the fields without a cart is also an option, but not advised. Finally, we also welcome well behaved dogs to the farm, but ask that they be kept on a leash in the general vicinity of the barn and parking areas—once out in the fields you are welcome to allow them off the leash provided they do not create a hazard to themselves or a problem for other customers. (Also, should your dog go to the bathroom on the farm, there is no need to scoop).

When you can do it:

We are open everyday from the day after Thanksgiving until December 23, and our hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For reasons of safety, we do not allow customers in the fields after 4:00 p.m.

Pre-Cut

Throughout the Christmas tree season we typically offer a selection of trees for sale that do not require customers to cut their own trees. Our pre-cut trees are typically cut on Friday and Saturday of each week. Although we try to offer a broad selection of sizes and varieties, these trees are available on a first come, first serve basis. Regrettably, we cannot guarantee when or how many of any particular variety or size will be available.

Additional Services

For all trees, regardless of whether they are cut-your-own or pre-cut, we include shaking of the tree, drilling, and baling at no additional cost. These additional services are not mandatory and often not feasible or necessary.

Shaking: Is done to help clear loose or dead needles from trees.

Drilling: Is only necessary for customers with the Stand Straight tree stand. Drilling does not impact water uptake or prolong the “life” of the tree.

Baling: Involves wrapping the tree in twine and can make for easier transporting by car and for getting into the house. We cannot guarantee that baling will not slightly damage some lower branches.
